Gabon reports outbreak of Chikungunya virus

Togavirus particleAn outbreak of the mosquito-borne Chikungunya virus has hit the central African country of Gabon with 5,000 suspected cases reported so far.

Chikungunya is a Togavirus first identified in Tanzania in 1952 and causes a high fever, headache, nausea, vomiting and muscle and joint pains.

  • I have not heard of any news of CHIKV outbreak in recent past…is the news latest and are the cases still on with symptoms of CHIKV infection and has the virus been confirmed and isolated from their blood samples? are they positive for the PCR? as the post has been posted recently, i assume it is the latest news but would like to confirm it..
