FYI - Emanuel Swedenborg (1688-1772) made a somewhat similar discovery concerning the importance of magnetic structure in microbiology. Swedenborg is now considered the father of neuron theory (from an article in JAMA). As you may well know, when cells divide spindles form along paths which seem to mimic magnetic lines.
