This specimen of hair was plucked from the head of a 7 year
old school child complaining of an itchy scalp.
1) What is it ?
Head louse egg (nit)
2) Identify the parasite responsible for it (genus and
species)
Pediculis humanus var. capitis
3) Suggest a course of action to inform the child's parents
about treatment and prevention.
Use a recommended pediculicide treatment once, followed by
a secondary treatment 10 days later to account for hatching of
eggs. Ensure entire family is similarly treated. Instruct
child as to preventative measures (eg. don't share hats,
towels, combs, etc)
