J. Michael Bishop and Harold Varmus discover that the oncogene from Rous sarcoma virus is also found in the cells of normal animals, including humans (Nobel Prize, 1989). Proto-oncogenes are essential for normal development but can become cancer genes when cellular regulators are damaged or modified, e.g. by virus transduction. |
