Kl-730 was prontosil rubrum, a red dye patented in 1935 by Bayer.
In November 1935 a six year old girl pricked herself with a needle. She developed Streptococcus pyogenes cellulitis. The infection spread to the lymph nodes of the axilla. Conventional treatment was surgical. The lymph nodes were lanced fourteen times in an attempt to drain the infected pus. The patient was deteriorating the surgeon wanted to amputate her arm to save her life. She was treated with prontosil rubrum and made a good recovery without an amputation.
She was lucky to have access to the drug.
Her name was Hildegard Domagk.
