What the heck is a PLE?

What's special about web 2.0?

Loosely coupled teaching

A PLE employs social software/web 2.0 tools outside of the confines of a VLE/LMS to enable learners to develop their own preferred learning environment. Ownership of both the content and the tools which comprise the PLE enables learners to sustain learning after formal courses have ended, and allows life-long learning.

Unlike a VLE, you won't be locked out of your PLE when "your" course ends.

By offering a choice of tools, learners personalize the PLE by following their preferred styles and patterns of learning. This enhanced stake holding motivates and sustains learning.

A VLE/LMS has some advantages, such as authentication, monitoring student progress and the convenience of "everything in one place". Loosely coupled teaching aims to blend the advantages of institutional systems while leveraging the power of contemporary social software/web 2.0 tools.
